about.
Young female Coast Salish artist based out of Victoria B.C. Striving to express my true self and break stereotypes one brush stroke at a time. Mainly work in oil paint, but love photographing the lovely indigneous traditional territories.
Artist Statement
While painting I try to explore my personal struggle I’ve had with connecting my cultural identity and my life outside of my culture (school, work etc). Sometimes it feels as if I have 3 heads, and they represent my cultural identity, my westernized/colonial identity and the middle is Me being pulled apart by this struggle. I try to combine the use of both my own style of painting as well as Coastal Indigenous form-line design elements to elaborate and express these feelings I’ve been struggling with.
I want a visual depiction of my internal struggles, and I am using it as a creative transition from who I was as an artist before the painting to an artist that doesn’t feel the need to separate my two identities.
